Best Place to Put an Air Purifier - 6 Helpful Tips from Home Air Helper

An air purifier is an excellent addition to the home if you’re looking for something to help you breathe easier. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t know how to get the most out of it! They stick it behind their couch or jam it into a corner far away, hoping it’ll still do the job.

This is about as effective as leaving your air purifier unplugged in the basement.

That’s why I’ve created this quick list of tips to help you decide on the best place to put your air purifier.

This short guide should help answer questions like:

    • Where should you position an air purifier?
    • What’s the best height to put an air purifier?
    • Where’s the best place to put an air purifier in the bedroom?

No more introductions, here are the tips you’re looking for!

This seems pretty straightforward, right? Because it is!

If it’s your dog’s bed that’s stinking up your living room, you should probably be putting it beside their pad! (Sorry Rex!) Or maybe you have a designated indoor smoking room? Consider putting your air purifier in there and it’ll be much more effective.

The closer your air purifier is to the source of the problem, the quicker it can fix the problem.

Think of your air purifier like the police station and the bad guys are the odors. (Bare with me for a sec!)

If you live next door to the police station, the police will be there the second you call 911. (Hopefully!)

Now, what if you’re 20 miles away? You might be waiting a little longer for them to get to you. The same applies to your air purifier.

Keep your air purifier close to the source of the odors!

This one’s pretty straightforward as well but important nonetheless.

Remember to keep your air purifier’s area of coverage in mind when deciding where to place it! If your air purifier can only purify 100 square feet, it’s probably not a good idea to place it in a huge basement. The same thing applies on the flip side as well (although it’s not as bad if you do it this way). If your air purifier has a coverage area of 1100 square feet, don’t stick it in your bedroom!

Consider putting it somewhere with more space to get the most out of it!

A table that compares the difference between air purifier coverage and room square footage. This will help decide whether or not the air purifier is right for the room you're considering.

It’s important to match the air purifier’s coverage area to the room you’re putting it in to, this will help maximize its effectiveness.

For almost all air purifiers, the air intake happens in the front-facing vents on the unit. To help the air purifier do its job, you need to avoid sticking it in a corner or putting it behind your couch or TV.

This is where most people go wrong.

They think that air purifiers can be stuck off in a corner and still work perfectly! Sure, the air purifier might work. but nowhere near its maximum effectiveness!

You need to have the air purifier in an open area.

I’m not saying make your air purifier the centerpiece of your living room! (Unless you really love it.)

Just make sure that the air purifier has at least a  foot of space on the front, back, sides, and top of it! This way it’ll be able to take in and deal with the odors and bacteria in your home, instead of the odors in the abandoned corner of your living room!

Places to Consider Putting Your Air Purifier

To help figure out where you should be putting your air purifier, here’s a list of places to consider:

    • Near the sides of the walls
    • Near your fridge
    • Beside a doorway leading into an open space
    • Close to your dresser
    • Opposite corner of where the TV is

Have you ever heard the phrase: “If you want it done right you have to do it yourself.” Well, guess what?

Air purifiers live and operate entirely on that sentiment! They don’t really play well with others.

If you think it might help to open doors and windows to “let in some fresh air” it really isn’t helpful at all. What it’s actually doing is erasing all of the hard work the air purifier is trying to do. By opening windows or doors, you’re letting in air from the outside that contains particles the air purifier is actively trying to remove.

Imagine you’re trying to empty out your bathtub with a bucket while the water is still running – You keep scooping out water but it just won’t empty out!

This is what you’d be doing to your air purifier by opening the windows! Remember, most particles we can’t see with our plain old eyes, but those dust & pollen particles are definitely rushing to get inside our house when given the chance.

This trick is pretty useful and not too many people are aware of it!

You can use your air purifier as a gatekeeper or security guard! (Stick with me here)

By putting your air purifier near a doorway into another room, your air purifier will be filtering out any harmful or irritating particles before they can get to the room!

For example – Let’s say you’re allergic to cats, but have two in your house anyway. Putting an air purifier by the doorway leading to your bedroom would prevent the cat’s hairs/dander/odors from getting into the bedroom! The air purifier will act almost like a security guard at a bar and kick them out before they can get in! (Related: Here’s an article of the best air purifiers for odor elimination if you’re looking!)

All you need to do is make sure the front is facing the area opposite to where your bedroom is. If you’re having a hard time picturing this – go into your bedroom doorway and face your bedroom. Where your back is facing is where you’ll want to point the air purifier! If you can’t understand my poor explanation, here’s a quick diagram I drew up in MSPaint!

This tip is very important to keep in mind if you’re buying an air purifier for a baby’s room or nursery!

This tip is similar to tip #3.

Air purifiers are typically classified as part of the “small electronics” group and because of this, they don’t really get along well with other small electronics.

What I’m saying is that air purifiers work on wavelengths, along with other small electronics. Sometimes these machines can operate on the same wavelength. By putting your air purifier near other electronics on the same wavelength it can cause interference for both the interfering electronics!

You’ll want to avoid placing your air purifier near things like:

There you have it! I hope this nifty-quick guide helped you make a decision on where to put your air purifier! If you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments and I’d be happy to help. 🙂

Thanks for reading and have a great day!
