The Honeywell MN12CES is a great choice if you want a portable AC that can cool and dehumidify a medium-sized room. It has a cooling power of 12,000 BTUs, enough for rooms up to 550 square feet.
This makes the Honeywell MN12CES ideal for most living rooms and bedrooms.
We are also happy to report that the Honeywell MN12CES is one of the quieter portable ACs in the market. It’s not as quiet as a window AC but doesn’t make a racket like most portable ACs.
Read on for our full review of the Honeywell MN12CES portable air conditioner.
1. 12,000 BTU Cooling Power
12,000 BTUs is the sweet point for most homes. It’s enough cooling power for the average size of rooms in homes.
The 12,000 BTU Honeywell MN12CES is rated to cool spaces up to 550 square feet. That covers most living rooms and bedrooms.
The high cooling power plus the vertical wind motion ensures fast cooling even on a hot day.
Similar to most portable ACs, the Honeywell MN12CES includes a built-in drying function that reduces humidity levels indoors.
The Honeywell MN12CES can remove up to 69 pints of moisture from the air per day in drying mode.
The AC is auto-evaporative, meaning the moisture is exhausted outdoors along with hot air.
But on extra-humid days or if you live in a humid area, some of the moisture will collect in a pan at the bottom of the unit.
It’s easy to drain the pan. You can also set up a hose to continually drain the pan, which is handy for folks in Florida (and other humid areas), or if you plan to leave the AC running for a long time.
3. Easy to Use Control Panel & Remote Control
The touch control panel is easy to operate. The buttons respond to a light touch, making it easy even for people with arthritis to adjust settings.
If you’d rather not stand up to change temperature, the Honeywell MN12CES AC comes with a remote controller.
The control panel and remote allow you to adjust the digital thermostat, select an operation mode (cooling, dry, fan-only), adjust fan speed, and set an auto-off timer.
4. Easy DIY Installation
Installing the Honeywell MN12CES is pretty straightforward. The AC comes with a window venting kit that is compatible with vertical and horizontal sliding windows with a maximum opening of 12 to 47 inches.
With some modifications and extra parts, you can also install the Honeywell MN12CES in a different kind of window and even in a windowless room (through a sliding door or wall).
Issues & Concerns
Big and Heavy
The unit plus the venting kit takes up quite a bit of space in the room, especially when you include the 20 inches of clearance needed from the wall.
The Honeywell MN12CES AC is also heavy, weighing close to 70lbs. It has wheels for easier portability, but it’s still a pain to move from room to room.
Honeywell MN12CES vs. Other Models
Where the Honeywell MN12CES stands out from other portable ACs is its low noise level. For its power, it should produce more noise than the 55 dB it makes on a high setting. It is surprisingly quiet.
If you are looking for a powerful but relatively quiet portable air conditioner, we highly recommend the Honeywell MN12CES.
Care and Maintenance
The Honeywell MN12CES portable AC comes with dual filters that trap pollutants and allergens.
You don’t need to replace these filters, but you’ll need to rinse them under a faucet every 1-2 weeks. If you don’t clean them regularly, the AC will get noisier and may not cool as efficiently.
The Honeywell MN12CES portable AC comes with a 1-year warranty for parts and labor, and a 1.5-year warranty for the compressor.
Based on customer reviews, Honeywell customer service tends to be a bit slow to respond to inquiries, but they do honor the warranty. If your AC has a problem, they’ll repair or replace it.
