Improve Your Home’s Air Quality

Home air purifiers, also known as air cleaners and clean air machines, can remove pollutants like dust, odors, pet dander and pollen from the air. Designed to filter the air in a single room, as opposed to a whole home, there are several types of air purifiers that utilize different technologies. Not sure which one is right for you? We can help you decide.

Types of Air Purifiers

Activated carbon and activated charcoal air purifiers use a chemical reaction that causes odor-causing particles to stick to the filter surface. They do require regular filter replacement and can help keep air odor free, but they are not as effective at removing bacteria, viruses, mold and mildew from the air.

HEPA air purifiers are extremely effective and can eliminate up to 99.97% of all particles in the air that are larger than 0.3 microns. To be labelled HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air), the filter must meet the minimum filtration requirements outlined by the US Department of Energy. If you’re looking for an air purifier for dust, this is the best option.

Ultraviolet (UV) air purifiers use ultraviolet C (UV-C) light to kill harmful microorganisms such as mold, viruses and bacteria. This type of technology is commonly used in medical facilities to target germs. Some UV filter models install in a home’s central air duct. Occasionally, UV air filters require bulb replacement to remain effective. To read about other air purifier types, check out our buying guide.

How to Use an Air Purifier

Once you’ve decided on the best purifier for your household, you’ll need to find a place for it. To get the most out of an air purifier, place it in one of the most frequently used rooms of your home, like a living room or bedroom. Not sure which size to buy? Use our Suggested Room Size filter to shop air purifiers based on the size of your room. For best results, run the air purifier continuously.
